Damselfly duo in a frame
A beautiful pair of Damselflies with iridescent green colored wings.
Interesting fact about damselflies is that there were here long before many other species, more than 300 million years ago! In the past some of them were as big as a hawk. They are also excellent predators and prey on mosquitoes. What not to love about them? Many damselflies have elaborate courtship behaviors. These are designed to show off the male's distinctive characteristics, bright coloring or flying abilities, thus demonstrating his fitness.
Damselflies are insects of the suborder Zygoptera in the order Odonata, and can be found anywhere in the world except Antarctica.
